Marine Foraminifera

Foraminifera are single-cell organisms that stream their protoplasm throughout their environment to catch food. While some forams are naked, most live inside a chambered test.

In a marine sample collected from mangroves in Bang Pu, alongside the Gulf of Thailand, I found a number of foram tests. The current churned the bottom of the sea, forcing sediment including foram test into my plankton net. Hundreds of pinpoint holes that the cell’s protoplasm passes through can be seen.
