Beggiatoa – Sulfur Bacteria

Beggiatoa is a filamentous bacteria which is often found floating in mats on the surface of polluted marine and freshwater environments. These colorless strands contain dark intracellular inclusions of sulfur resulting from the oxidization of hydrogen sulfide.

Beggiatoa glides throughout its environment, allowing it to reach areas with conditions more suitable for cellular metabolism. This video highlights this graceful movement, providing a peaceful and hypnotic look inside the microcosmos.
