Contractile Vacuoles in Paramecia
Contractile vacuoles are organelles that regulate the quantity of water inside a cell.
Because of the higher concentration of solutes inside a freshwater cell than outside, osmosis causes water to enter the cell. Radiating canals collect excess water from the cytoplasm and direct it into the contractile vacuole. When the vacuole is full it contracts, forcing water out of the cell to prevent it from rupturing.
