Tube of Floscularia ringens

A look at the tube of Floscularia ringens, a rotifer from a freshwater sample from southern Thailand.

The tube is made up of small, rounded pellets constructed by the rotifer in a specialized organ on its corona called the modulus (Wright 1950). The pellets are made from a combination of detritus from the environment and secretions from the rotifer. The pellets are attached to an underlying membrane that provides support (Fontaneto et al., 2003).
