Cellular Division in Vorticella

While Vorticella often begin division with the original organism tethered to a substrate, the dividing organism can become untethered during the process.

This condensed video captures the end of the cell division process. The Vorticella has become separated from its stalk and is swimming freely. At this stage, both the macronucleus and micronucleus have been split between the two halves of the dividing cell, nourishing vacuoles have been distributed between the two, and cilia have become active on both.
