Marine Benthic Foraminifera

Benthic Foraminifera are single-cell organisms that live on the sea floor. They typically create a test – a protective shell surrounding its body. The test can be multichambered.

Foraminifera can project its ectoplasm iinto a pseudopodial net through openings in the test. Pseudopodia are used for locomotion, anchoring, excretion, test construction and capturing food. Pseufopodia can extend a great distance from the test, creating huge networks that look like waterfalls. Under high magnification, granules can be seen streaming in both directions.
