Stomata are porelike openings on leaf surfaces that allow for gas exchange. This tiny leaf of common duckweed (Lemna minor) was floating on the surface of a fresh water sample, sending its delicate roots down into the water. These stomata, facing up into the open air, allow carbon dioxide to enter the plant, and oxygen and water to exit.
