Stentor coeruleus

Stentor coeruleus is a very large blue-green single-cell ciliate. It can stretch as long as 2mm.

Its macronucleus extends the length of its body like a string of beads, making injured organisms highly regenerative.

While mostly sessile (fixed in one place), S. coeruleus can detach and quickly traverse its environment. Rings of beating cilia guide food into its oral pouch.
